Stephen King
“From the Studio – Prints and Sculptures”
Walcha Gallery of Art, 16 October – November 24 2009

Stephen King is currently holding an exhibition of sculptures, prints and paintings at the new Walcha Gallery of Art. The prints are a selection of the many linocuts and etchings that King has produced since the early 1980’s. This exhibition is an opportunity to see King’s sculptures in the context of the issues and stories of rural life that he has depicted in his printmaking.

Stephen King was born in Bingara, NSW in 1958 and studied at the Sydney College of the Arts from 1977 – 1979, where he gained a Diploma of Visual Arts with a printmaking major. In1981 he traveled to London to study at St.Martins School of Art.

King returned to Walcha on the Northern Tablelands, NSW to live and work on his family’s sheep and cattle farm. He continued his printmaking and gradually moved into making carved figurative sculpture using fallen timber from the farm.

His subjects have ranged from generational change and continuity to the role of big business and religious ideals. His current work is exploring the business of farming and how man and nature struggle to find the right balance.

King is one of three “Distinguished Invited Artists” to be exhibiting this year in Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi. This is the twelfth time that he has been selected for Bondi and he has also exhibited three times at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe Beach, WA.

This year’s work “The Eight” was inspired during the time his three daughters were rowing and it describes the moment when the boat is held aloft just before the stroke-side and bow-side rowers part to shoulder the boat. It stands 13m wide and 4m high. The exhibition runs from 29 October -15 November.

Previous solo exhibitions include; Tamworth City Art Gallery, 1983, Coventry Gallery, Paddington NSW, 1985-1999, BBA Gallery, Chippendale, 2000-2003, Group exhibitions include “Surface Memories”, 2003 and  “Regional Encounters”, 2006 at the Tamworth Regional Gallery, NSW,  Walcha City of Art – New Contemporaries, QVB, Sydney, Walcha City of Art – “Contemporary Australian Art” at the Karlovy Vary Art Gallery, Czech Republic 2006, Stephen King and Mike Nicholls Linocuts at Galerie F, Klatovy, Czech Republic, 2006, The 6th International Linocut Symposium, White Unicorn Gallery, Klatovy/Klenova, Czech Republic, 2006, “Three’s Company” at Michael Reid, Elizabeth Bay, Sydney, 2007 and he was the joint winner of Aquasculpture, Port Macquarie, NSW in 2007.
